Why ISO 15118-20 matters

The standard defines IP-based communication between the vehicle communication controller and supply-equipment communication controller. Its scope includes bidirectional transfer, wireless communication, automatic connection and charging/control-status information exchange.

ISO 15118-20:2022/Amd 1:2026 was published in July 2026. Its official scope names AC DER service, MCS service and an improved security concept, so a product roadmap should plan for secure updateability and interoperability testing.

From capability to deployment

Plug & Charge or V2X is not simply a UI option. The trust chain, certificates, vehicle compatibility, station configuration and operator/grid requirements must be evaluated as an end-to-end scenario.

  • Treat certificate and key lifecycle as a product-operations concern.
  • Test compatibility against target vehicles and exact protocol versions.
  • Condition any V2X-ready claim on testing and permissions in the target market.
