The third edition of IEC 62196-3 replaces the 2022 edition, integrates IEC TS 62196-3-1 and references new tests in IEC 62196-1:2025.
What changed in the 2026 edition?
IEC 62196-3:2026 covers dimensional-compatibility requirements for DC and AC/DC couplers used in conductive charging and replaces the 2022 second edition. It integrates IEC TS 62196-3-1 as a normative annex.
The publication also notes increased ratings and references new IEC 62196-1:2025 tests. In practice, cable, connector, temperature sensing and mechanical testing should not be separated from architecture selection.
An international standard is not a market decision
A standard defines an interface, but selecting a product’s ports must also reflect the target vehicle mix, national rules, operator requirements, power need, environment, user experience and service plan.
- Validate the target-market vehicle and connector mix before freezing the BOM.
- For high-current use, test temperature scenarios and cable serviceability separately.
- Record the applicable edition in the design-verification plan.
