In DC charging, the vehicle–EVSE digital interface is distinct from the station-to-management-system interface. A dependable design keeps those layers separate.
Two interfaces, two responsibilities
Together with IEC 61851-23, IEC 61851-24:2023 covers digital communication between DC EVSE and the vehicle for control of conductive DC power transfer. This is the layer for negotiating and controlling charging between vehicle and station.
By contrast, the station-to-CSMS connection serves monitoring, events, configuration, transactions and energy management. Keeping the boundaries separate makes troubleshooting, security and product evolution more manageable.
Architecture checklist
In software architecture, keep real-time charging control independent from cloud or management services so a loss of external connectivity does not compromise safe local behavior.
- Test loss-and-recovery scenarios independently for each interface.
- Separate and timestamp EV–EVSE events and CSMS events in the logs.
- Minimize dependencies from commercial features into safe local control.
